CATARACT Surgery

The Lasik Surgery Clinic @ DLS-STI MegaClinic is a complete refractive eye center which also offers other refractive procedures aside from Lasik, such as lens exchange and cataract extraction, through phacoemulsification.

What is Lens Exchange?

With some patients, laser vision correction  or LASIK may not be the preferred procedure to correct the errors of refraction (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia) for many reasons a few of which are age of the patient and conditions of the cornea.

For these patients, a more appropriate procedure is removal of the lens by phacoemulsification and implantation of an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). This is an outpatient major operation involving a small incision which will not need suturing. The objective of the procedure is refractive, providing the patient freedom from corrective prescription glasses or contact lenses.

What is Cataract Extraction?

Cataract is the opacification of the lens that is most commonly due to aging, although diabetes, prolonged steroid intake, systemic disease and trauma may play a part in

its progression. It commonly affects individuals ages 60 and above. The symptoms of cataract include blurring or cloudiness of vision that cannot be corrected with the use of corrective glasses.

When the cataract is deemed mature, it is removed through a surgical procedure which involves a small incision without the need for suturing, removal of the cataractous lens by means of phacoemulsification and implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL). It is a safe and fast out-patient procedure done while patient is awake using topical (eyedrops)  anesthesia. Visual recovery is expected within a few days.

What are IOLs?

Intraocular Lenses are artificially made (acrylic) replacement lenses intended to be implanted into the eye after lens extraction for optimum visual recovery. At The Lasik Surgery Clinic, our cataract surgeons only use foldable BFAD approved IOLs ranging from monofocal IOLS, aspheric IOLs, toric IOLs, and Multifocal IOLs.
